After starting my blog and becoming engrossed in the whole blogging community, I quickly saw that people love to name their quilts. I know it makes perfect sense, as referring to a quilt as “that yellow and blue quilt I made for Grandma last year” isn’t the most creative of names.
Once I decided that I needed to name my quilts as well, I realized that it’s not very easy! It seems to me that some people have a talent for picking out interesting names, and I am not one of them! For instance, the names I pick for my quilts tend to be boring stuff like “Sarah’s Quilt” or “Picnic Quilt” or something similar and boring. But there was one time I tried to be clever….I had just designed this quilt for Empty Bobbin Sewing Studios, but we couldn’t think of a name….
I knew I wanted a creative, masculine name so I suggested “Jock Strap”….not sure why Shea (the owner of Empty Bobbin Sewing Studio) didn’t like it…..hmm. So we decided on Bleachers. I guess I should save my creativity for my quilting!
Since it’s so hard for me to pick out names, I have a great appreciation for those who can! Some of my favorite quilt-namers include Emily Cier of Carolina Patchworks. She always has interesting names, like Quilt-o-matic:
John Adams, aka Quilt Dad, is also clever when it comes to naming his quilts. One of his latest quilts, featured in the book Geared For Guys, is named Urban Decay and it fits the quilt perfectly!
So these quilts lead me to ask the question, how do you pick names for your quilts? I think I may always be hopeless when it comes to picking out names, but maybe….just maybe….with a little help, I can get it together!
In the meantime….Quilt Fearlessly!
