Exploring Modern Quilts Unlimited and Trends This Year

January is a month chock full of goodness here at Modern Quilts Unlimited! The Winter issue will be out later this month, and there are some cool projects, techniques, and eye candy to check out. Make sure to look at out the Web Extras Section to see what’s going on in addition to the physical magazine, too. In the next few months, a great variety of new material will be appearing there, including the “Block of the Month Challenge“.

WHAT’S COMING UP ONLINE

Decembers “Block of the Month Challenge”, the Pinwheel, has been opened up for voting (follow the link here to vote for your favorite!), and the new challenge has also just been announced, the Square in Square:

 SquareinanSquare

To enter the challenge, the following rules apply (For full rules and regulations, please visit this post):
1) Blocks must be 12 12″ x 12 1/2″ finished

2) the fabrics must be Michael Miller and the names of the specific fabric given

3) The final entry must be a photo of the actual block in Michael Miller Fabrics

Entries should be entered on the official Block of the Month page.

The prizes are pretty great, and there will be a final challenge at the end of the year.  Let your creativity loose, and let’s see what you can do!

TRENDSTO WATCH FOR THE YEAR

Hand piecing, applique, quilting, and other hand techniques: the Slow Stitching movement continues to gain speed as more people find peace and satisfaction in the work directly from their hands. Modern Quilt Unlimited’s Summer Issue of 2015 featured Allie Aller and her cover quilt Crazy Dresden.  Incorporating beautiful big-stitch quiltling, she is an advocate for hand work.  There is also a “Hand Stitch Primer” in that issue, which I know I found really useful as a beginner.
