Casey York’s Modern Appliqué Illusions! Blog Tour

UPDATE!! The winner of the book drawing is Nancy Evans! Thank you everyone for reading and commenting.

We are so excited to be the final posting on the blog tour for Casey York‘s new book, Modern Appliqué Illusions!  We have enjoyed Casey’s designs and articles in Modern Quilts Unlimited, and have had a great time getting to know her at Quilt Markets and other shows.

Casey’s book is about perspective and illusion using line and space. Using these techniques you can turn a flat design into a 3-D image, make colors pop forward or softly recede and use shadows to emphasize images. Strolling through the pages is simply FUN!

Casey's Book

Using themes of Architecture, Nature and Concepts, Casey makes quilts that defy classification – they are at once modern, art, with traditional appliqué aspects as well. One of my favorite quilts is Casey’s GROVE. A study in light and shadow, it makes me want to wander through her world!

Another example of simplicity yet a powerful message is RIVERBEND. Casey kept the background stitching minimal, which only enhanced the haunting image. I want to know where this river comes from, and where it is going!

Casey’s admitted favorite is RIPPLES. The concentric circles give the illusion of moving water, and the drop shadows further act to make it appear as if you are looking down into a pool.
